What Are The Most Common Gutter Problems?

What Are The Most Common Gutter Problems?

Gutters are designed to shift damaging water away from a home; therefore, they are crucial for the wellbeing of a home. Gutters take a beating from outside elements though, so they easily face many issues. The following problems are the most common and are reasons why you should have your gutter maintained/inspected and cleaned regularly.

Clogged Gutters

Gutters easily collect anything and everything outside that blows around. This includes any debris you can think of from leaves and pine needles to dirt and trash. This causes gutters to clog and not properly route water away from the home.

Leaks and Holes

These can be caused by harsh weather, joints that are coming apart, etc. When gutters cannot drain water properly, roof water overflows and easily accumulates around the areas of a house that gutters are supposed to keep water away from. A leak can even cause your gutter to fall from your roof. Gutter joints that leak can be caulked and sealed for a small cost. Small holes can be filled with sealant, but you may have to patch the larger holes.

Wrong Gutter Pitch

In order for water to flow towards the downspout, gutters must have a pitch. This means they must be slanted at a correct angle to ensure water is not stagnant. The recommended pitch is ¼ inch per 10 feet. If water is standing after a rainstorm in a certain area of your gutter, this most likely means that your gutters are incorrectly pitched.

Insect Infestation

Bugs LOVE moisture. This means that they will love your consistently wet gutters if they are not properly maintained.

Gutters Pull Away from Your Home

You may notice one day that your gutters just don’t look straight. They may be sagging or even pulling away from your home. This could be an easy fix with new hangers, or the gutters may need to be replaced. It is imperative that you find hangers that can hold up the weight of your gutters, and that you place the hangers closer together.
