What Causes Tiger Striping On Gutters?

What Causes Tiger Striping on Gutters?

Tiger striping causes unsightly looking gutters. What causes it? How do you prevent it?

Inevitably, debris builds up in your gutter or even on the lips of the trough. This debris can consist of dirt, pollen, algae, roofing material, etc. These pollutions stick to your gutters and attract to droplets of dew and water. When the water droplets streaks down the gutters, the pollution particles streak with it. Over time, the buildup causes black streaks on your gutter – tiger stripes. This is a natural process that can happy to a variety of surfaces such as: rain gutters, cars, metal roofs, home siding, etc

Is there a way to prevent this striping from happening? The easiest way is to ensure you clean your gutters at least once a year. Depending upon your climate, they may need a more frequent cleaning, especially in areas with high humidity and industrial activity. To clean your gutter, use a soft rag, sponge, or brush along with a cleaning product that is safe to use on gutters and gently rub the surface. Don’t scrub vigorously, as you may remove some of the finish. Ensure that you test the cleaning solution on a small, inconspicuous portion of your gutter to ensure paint isn’t removed. Repeat if the product doesn’t hold up well to your gutter. Then, use a garden hose to spray off the cleaning solution and prevent it from sticking.

This same cleaning method can be used to remove the tiger striping. It may take a little longer as the stripes have been caked on. Ensure that you work in sections so that the solution doesn’t stick. The solution will need to set for about two minutes before scrubbing.
