What Is A Rain Chain?

What is a Rain Chain?

Downspouts are designed to spit water away from the foundation of your home. They are essential to your home’s protection; however, they don’t have to be an eye sore. They also don’t have to be bulky. Some definitely stand out and not in a good way. We are here to share what a rain chain is, how it can be used as a downspout, and how it can improve your home’s curb appeal.

What are rain chains? They are beautiful, functional, alternative gutter downspouts. Instead of using closed, bulky gutter downspouts, these chains are used to guide water down from the roof to the ground. The chains fall directly from the gutter hole, catch the water, and easily route it down the chain. Instead of needing to be tilted away from the house, they are already spaced away from the home, straight from the gutter hole; therefore, there is less worry about pooling water.

Rain chains are appropriate when downspouts are connected to a permanent awning or something else that is not directly connected to the house. The homeowner can spruce them up with concrete or cast resin splash guards. This could also be a great way to water a gorgeous plant by attaching it to the end of each chain.

Rain chains have been around for hundreds of years. The Japanese have used them to transport rain water from their roofs and deposit it into large barrels for household water usage. Japanese have ornate, large rain chains incorporated into their design. Rain chains are actually more obtainable in South America than machined downspouts.

These gorgeous features can definitely spruce up your home’s curb appeal without weighing too heavily on your pocket book.
